Portable Bbq Grill Home Page
It seems I grew up around the Barbecue Grill. Many of our meals were cooked on one. Although we lived in a city & my dad worked in an office, he started up the bbq when ever time & circumstance permitted. If he wanted a piece of toast on a Saturday morning, why use an electric toaster when you could light up a bbq? I remember once counting 14 bbqs around the house, some portable some not.
Dad was happy with his bbqs, then one day he discovered "The Weber" & a whole new dimension in barbecue cooking unfolded - an oven like cooking situation combined with a barbecue with some protection from the elements.
The history of the weber is quite fascinating. Many of you would be aware of the frustration that accompanies cooking in the open on a real windy day where your heat is blowing away or when there is just a little rain around. In 1952 a man named George Stephen Senior suffered the same frustration of uneven heat & uncontrollable flame in the wind & became determined to design something that would fix the problem.
Now George was part owner of a sheet metal shop (Weber Brothers Metal Works) where a number of things were made, one being the manufacture of bouys for the boating trade in nearby Lake Michigan. The bouys were made out of two formed half spheres - that's where the idea came from. He quickly got to work using the half sphere as a cover, he fashioned a bbq grill beneath & 'voila' the first Weber Kettle Grill was made & the company has gone on to make some of the best outdoor cooking products on the planet - well done George! (it really does pay to get a 'bee in your bonnet' about something doesn't it!)
The weber kettle really accomplished even more than George set out to fix (i.e. Shielding from the weather). It works not only as a fast griller but also a slow cooker & engenders a great smoky flavour to the food.
George became so excited with the concept that he bought the Weber company & devoted all his work time to producing & marketing the Weber Grill. The local demand turned into a national demand & eventually an international demand & today 'The Weber' is available all over the world. Their grills and accessories are found for sale in 30 different countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States)
His initial design was just for a charcoal version as that was all was required back in the 1950's but as times changed he went on to produce both gas & electric versions of 'The Weber' to satisfy all tastes.
Today Weber make a number of outdoor cooking products, some stay at home types & some designed to be portable. This site will look at the latter. Webers portable grills include a mixture of gas, electric & charcoal fueled grills :-
